Which Types of Botanicals Are Best for Your Needs?

In the world of alternative medicine, botanicals are quickly gaining ground in both popularity and recognition.

By now, you may have already heard of certain popular medicinal plants, such as cannabis. However, you might be less familiar with others, including kratom and kanna.

While different botanicals each have their own chemical makeups and different active compounds, many share similar health benefits. For instance, both kratom and CBD oil can help ease your painful muscles and deliver a better night’s sleep. At the same time, kanna and kratom are equally excellent at elevating your mood and relieving anxiety.

That said, how can you know which ones to reach for? With a great variety of botanicals on the market, are there certain ones that will meet your needs more than others?

Today, we’re taking a closer look at this question. Read on to discover how to research, review and select the perfect supplements.

Understanding Different Botanicals

As the Western world becomes more aware of traditional herbal remedies, these therapeutic treatments are being closely evaluated for the ways that they can help relieve a variety of conditions, such as chronic pain.

While many of them share common traits, it’s important to realize that their molecular structures are different from one another. That means they’ll affect your body in different ways. They also come with varying risks and side effects to keep in mind.

Botanicals For Anxiety

First, let’s take a look at a few of the different botanicals available to help soothe the symptoms of anxiety. In addition to emotional stress and a racing mind, you may also experience physical signs of this condition, such as a rapid heartbeat or fatigue.

Your healthcare physician is well-versed on your medical history and will be able to guide you toward treatments and therapies that can help you manage your anxiety on a regular basis. Even exercises such as yoga can help relieve symptoms.

However, if you want to pursue an alternative route, or are simply looking for a supplement to add to your daily regimen, there are botanicals that can help.

Two of the most common ones are CBD and kratom. Let’s explore each one a little more closely.

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a natural extract derived from the cannabis plant. Unlike another cannabis extract, THC, it does not contain psychoactive properties and will not get you high.

Instead, CBD is more commonly used for medicinal purposes.

For instance, you can find CBD oil in lotions and salves designed for targeted muscle relaxation. Or, you can find tinctures for sublingual use. You can even mix it into drinks and edibles.

In addition to oils, CBD is also available in many other forms, including:

  • Capsules
  • Gummies
  • Gum
  • Vape oil
  • Spray

In your search to find the best CBD oil, you’ll find that it’s generally available in two forms: broad-spectrum and full-spectrum.

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains a variety of naturally-occurring cannabis plant extracts, including up to 0.3% THC. On the other hand, while wide-spectrum CBD oil also contains many extracts, it’s usually devoid of THC.

MCT vs Hemp Oil

In our online shop, you’ll also notice that we sell CBD in two different carrier oils: MCT oil and hemp oil. Which one should you choose? There isn’t a right or wrong answer, and it all depends on your preference.

MCT oil is derived from coconut oil and boost the solubility of the CBD it contains. However, if you prefer the potent, nutty aroma and flavor of hemp, you can opt for that solution instead. In that case, our Full-Spectrum CBD in Hemp Oil is a great place to start. If you plan to cook with CBD oil or ingest it sublingually, hemp oil makes an excellent carrier oil.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of CBD oil, what about kratom?

This tree is native to Southeast Asia, and its technical name is Mitragyna speciosa. Kratom has been used in the East for centuries to help field workers manage chronic, long-term pain. More recently, it’s made its way to the West, where it’s usually ground into a fine powder and consumed as a tea or capsule.

Generally, lower doses of kratom are known to deliver a gentle energy boost and help you maintain focus and sense of euphoria throughout the day. At higher doses, kratom can take on an opioid-like effect and help calm anxiety, relieve stress and even help you sleep better at night.

For your convenience, we also sell kratom powders and kratom capsules in our online shop. You’ll find that there are many different strains to choose from, and differently colored ones provide varying benefits. For instance, red-vein kratom strains usually deliver a more sedative experience, while green-vein and white-vein strains are natural mood-boosters.

CBD or Kratom: Which to Choose For Anxiety?

Both CBD and kratom can offer powerful, effective relief when you’re feeling especially anxious.

If you’re having a difficult time deciding between the two, it helps to understand their unique mechanisms of action. Kratom calms your nerves because it contains active compounds that bind to the opioid receptors in your brain.

These are the same receptors that also bind to prescription painkillers. As such, while it’s not technically an opioid, kratom can not only quell anxiety but can also relax your tense muscles and provide powerful pain relief.

Then, there’s CBD.

CBD does not bind to the opioid receptors in your brain. Instead, it binds to your body’s cannabinoid receptors, located throughout your brain and nervous system. When you’re seeking anxiety relief, the CBD will bind to your CB1 receptors. These are the ones that affect pain, mood and emotion.

Possible Side Effects

Kratom and CBD oil also have different associated risks and side effects. For instance, while most people can tolerate CBD oil well, taking quantities that are too high can result in:

  • Dizziness
  • Hallucinations
  • Low blood pressure
  • Depression

Conversely, kratom carries a slightly longer list of possible side effects. A few of the most prominent ones include:

  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Weight loss
  • Dry mouth
  • Chills
  • Drowsiness

If you’re on the fence about whether to take CBD oil or kratom to help manage anxiety, know that each one can help you find the relief you need. However, they both work differently internally and carry their own sets of side effects.

Botanicals For Pain

Just as CBD and kratom can be effective against anxiety, those same properties also make them incredible pain-relievers. Before we explore how they work, let’s distinguish between the two main types of pain.

First, there’s nociceptive pain.

This is the type of acute pain that’s caused by physical damage to your body’s tissue systems. For instance, a broken bone, a cut on your leg, or a burn on your wrist are all examples of nociceptive pain. Once it heals, it should dissipate.

Then, there’s neuropathic pain. This is chronic, long-term pain that’s caused by the damage, dysfunction or deterioration of neurons in your body. This causes your brain to receive messages of pain even though there’s no actual, physical damage to your body.

One of the most common types of neuropathic pain is fibromyalgia. It’s also prevalent in multiple sclerosis and neuropathy.

CBD or Kratom: Which to Choose For Pain?

Both CBD and kratom can work well on nociceptive and neuropathic pain.

For instance, you might rub a CBD-infused lotion onto a tight back after a particularly long day at work. Or, you might find great relief from a daily cup of kratom tea if you suffer from fibromyalgia.

To help you decide between the two, keep in mind that because it binds to your brain’s opioid receptors, there is a chance of withdrawal symptoms associated with kratom. This is especially true if you take it for a long time and stop suddenly without tapering your doses. However, these symptoms are mild compared to those you’d experience with an actual opioid addiction.

Botanicals For Energy and Mood Elevation

Sometimes, you don’t want to relax or unwind. You also don’t need pain relief. Instead, you simply want a perk-up!

Do you find it difficult to get going in the mornings? Do you continuously feel sluggish and unable to concentrate at work?

As mentioned, low doses of kratom can help deliver this effect. Try a white or green strain, such as White Borneo Kratom Powder, to get started. Blended into a cup of morning tea, it can give your brain the boost it needs to stay focused and alert all day long.

While some studies do point to CBD’s use as an energy enhancer, it’s universally considered more of a sedative substance. The most promising research comes from one particular study that found that some CBD users did report greater levels of wakefulness, although the study mentioned that further research was necessary to make this connection.

With CBD out in this regard, this is an excellent time to introduce you to another one of our favorite botanicals: kanna!

Like kratom, low doses of kanna powder can also help you feel more alert, awake and euphoric. Let’s explore this plant a little more closely.

What Is Kanna?

The kanna plant, or Sceletium tortuosum, is native to South Africa. Unlike the kratom tree, this is actually a succulent! In traditional and ancient medicine, users would chew directly on the plant, although it’s more commonly sold as a powder, chew or liquid extract now.

Kanna contains a variety of powerful alkaloids, most notably mesembrine. It’s mesembrine that gives the plant its most beneficial effects. Specifically, users note that kanna delivers fast-acting cognitive and mood-boosting properties.

We sell a few types of kanna powder in our online shop, including Kanna Powder Sceletium Tortuosum. Like all of our products, it’s sourced from sustainable growers and is guaranteed to be top-quality.

Kanna makes a delicious tea and also be blended into your favorite, non-baked edibles. If you’re looking for a natural way to simply feel perkier and more at ease during the day, it’s an excellent place to begin.

Kratom or Kanna: Which to Use for Energy and Mood?

Both kratom powder and kanna are ideal for a gentle energy boost! At low doses, they’re known to deliver common results, including:

  • Mood elevation
  • Decreased anxiety
  • Reduced tension
  • Stimulation
  • Sense of euphoria

At higher doses, kanna works in a way similar to kratom, binding to the opioid receptors in your brain. This can help relieve tension and calm anxiety, though it’s more commonly used for the purposes listed above.

The Importance of Careful Sourcing

As long as you source your kratom, kanna, or CBD from a reputable supplier like us, you can feel confident that you’re receiving a great product.

However, keep in mind that unscrupulous sellers could try to take advantage of curious buyers and offer products that are low-quality, not as potent or potentially unsafe. Always ask to see a certificate of authenticity (COA) if you’re concerned about the efficacy or safety of a certain product.

At Etanicals, we provide COAs for our products right on our website. If you don’t see one, then just ask!
