The benefits of CBD Oil

If you’re dialed into health news, chances are you’ve heard some buzz about CBD in the last few years. This compound gets a lot of attention because of its association with marijuana, but CBD is much more important than that. CBD won’t get you high, but it could provide some amazing health benefits. Many of the benefits of CBD oil are still under investigation, but there have been a few promising studies.

Read on to discover the benefits CBD could bring you and how it’s changing the future of medicine today.

What Is CBD Oil?

Before we dive into all the benefits CBD oil can provide, let’s talk some about what it is. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the chemical compounds that make up the marijuana plant. Another of these compounds is THC, the element of marijuana that makes you high.

Unlike THC, CBD will not get you high, as it bonds with different receptors in your brain. But the fact that it does bond with your cannabinoid receptors means it can provide some amazing health benefits. Doctors and researchers are still exploring all the amazing things CBD can do, but there are already medications approved and on the market that include CBD.

One of the most important things CBD has been proven to do is to treat epilepsy. In fact, the first FDA-approved drug containing CBD as an active ingredient is used to treat certain forms of epilepsy. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome are both tremendously difficult to treat, but CBD can help.

The FDA first approved Epidiolex in June 2018 after extensive research and double-blind trials. The medications represent a chance for children with these two forms of epilepsy to live a more normal, healthy life. Better seizure control means they can stay in school more, have better social lives, and even have better prospects in the job market.

Relieve Pain

Among the earliest things CBD was known to be effective at is reducing pain. Your body has a system called the endocannabinoid system which contributes to your sleep, appetite, immune system, and pain response. As the name suggests, cannabinoids such as CBD oil interact with this system to help alleviate pain.

CBD may be a good option for people living with chronic pain due to conditions like fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis. It might also be a good option for people recovering from surgery and trying to control pain without resorting to using opioids. It’s important to note that while this treatment option is promising, the FDA has not approved any CBD-containing medications for pain control.

Improve Inflammation

One of the best potential uses for CBD oil is to reduce inflammation. In addition to being able to relieve pain, this compound might help to reduce swelling and improve inflammatory conditions. This is due to the fact that it binds with the endocannabinoid receptors located in your brain which handle pain.

Inflammation can be a serious problem for people living with arthritis and other joint conditions. CBD oil may help to reduce swelling from these conditions, as well as multiple sclerosis. This keeps you on your feet and more active, which can help you stay healthier all the way around.

Reduce Anxiety

More than 40 million American adults live with anxiety, a disorder that can make it hard for you to attend social gatherings, speak in public, try new experiences, or even perform routine tasks. Far from just causing a little nervousness from time to time, this disorder can cause panic attacks, insomnia, and more. Anti-anxiety medications can make you sleepy, give you headaches, and cause sexual dysfunction.

CBD may help to relieve symptoms of anxiety and could act as a mood stabilizer. Some studies indicate that it may be able to combat insomnia, one of the primary symptoms of anxiety. Another small study showed that CBD oil was more effective at reducing anxiety about public speaking more than a placebo.

If we were to ask you what the single-largest contributor to global disability is, you might say amputation, war, or birth defects. But according to the World Health Organization, that title actually belongs to depression. More than 300 million people around the world are living with depression, and depression can impact anyone.

There are medications that can help improve depression, but they can often have unpleasant side effects. Some studies have shown that CBD may interact with the serotonin receptors in the brain, which can improve your mood. A few animal studies have also shown that CBD oil can reduce depression symptoms in animals.

Alleviate Cancer Treatment Symptoms

Getting a cancer diagnosis is one of the worst nightmares many of us can imagine, but the diagnosis is only the beginning. If you have a good prognosis, you’ll likely have to start chemotherapy treatment. This can cause severe nausea and vomiting, on top of the pain cancer already causes.

CBD oil may be able to help alleviate some of these symptoms for cancer patients. As we’ve discussed, CBD can help to relieve pain, and it may be safer than current medications used to manage cancer pain. Some small studies have also shown that CBD may be effective for reducing nausea and vomiting for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Reduce Acne

For many people, acne is one of those inconvenient teenage annoyances that we grow out of by the time we hit our twenties. But for some of us, acne can leave us scarred and ashamed to show our skin without makeup or layers. This can cause severe self-esteem issues and may even lead to isolation and depression.

Some studies have shown that CBD oil may be helpful in combatting acne thanks to its ability to reduce sebum production. Sebum is one of the oils your skin produces that’s primarily responsible for causing acne. CBD oil may be able to help keep your skin from producing too much sebum, as well as reducing the inflammation that makes your acne seem so red and swollen.

Protect Your Brain

Given that CBD interacts with receptors in your brain, it should come as no surprise that CBD oil might have a positive impact on your brain. As we’ve already discussed, epilepsy medications containing CBD are FDA-approved and available on the market today. But CBD may have other neuroprotective properties for people living with various other conditions.

People who live with multiple sclerosis can experience muscle spasms that leave them unable to move and function normally. One study of a CBD-containing medication showed that it reduced these spasms by as much as 75 percent. Other studies have also shown that CBD may help alleviate symptoms for Parkinson’s disease patients and may reduce mental decline in Alzheimer’s patients.

Improve Your Heart Health

Heart health is one of those things that many of us have on our minds and for good reason. Every year, more than 800,000 people have heart attacks, and about 18 million adults have coronary artery disease. About 655,000 Americans die of heart disease every year – that’s about one person every thirty-six seconds and one-quarter of total American deaths each year.

CBD may be able to reduce your blood pressure, improving your overall heart health. One recent small study showed that CBD caused a greater reduction in blood pressure than a placebo. Some other studies have also indicated that CBD’s inflammation-reducing powers may help to keep your heart healthy and going strong.

Reduce Psychotic Symptoms

Schizophrenia is a terrifying and debilitating disorder that can cause hallucinations, delusions, and other disordered thinking that can make it impossible for a person to live a normal, happy life. Likewise, psychosis is a disorder that can lead people to injure themselves or others in horrific ways. Both are treatable with medications, but these drugs often have dreadful side effects.

There is some early evidence that CBD oil may help to reduce psychotic symptoms in people with these disorders. While it is still critical that these people get professional psychological treatment and continue taking approved medications, this avenue of research is hopeful. Someday, patients may be able to manage their disorders with CBD and experience fewer side effects.

Treat Substance Abuse

One of the more popular uses for CBD is as a treatment for substance abuse. Part of the challenge of treating these addictions is managing the physiological dependence people develop with these dangerous substances. Trying to find a substitute that is safe, but that will handle that physiological dependence is a challenge, to say the least.

Because CBD bonds with receptors in our brains, it can actually change some of the “wiring” related to addiction. In essence, CBD reroutes the signals in your brain that tell your body you need a hit of your drug. So far, trials have been limited to lab rats, but they’re showing promising results for reducing morphine and heroin dependence.

Reduce Tumor Spread

While none of us want a cancer diagnosis, if you do develop cancer, the important thing is that you catch it early. If the tumor is small and localized, it may be possible to do surgery and remove it. But things start getting deadly when tumors grow and when they metastasize to other parts of the body.

CBD might be helpful in keeping tumors small and localized to make them easier to remove. Some preliminary research has shown that CBD prevented the spread of breast, prostate, colon, lung, and brain cancer in animals. It has shown similar effects in test tube studies, giving many people hope that it could save lives down the road.

More than 34 million American adults live with diabetes, and another 88 million have prediabetes. It’s very possible to live a normal, healthy life with diabetes, but it does come with some severe lifestyle restrictions. Left untreated, it can also result in blindness, amputation, coma, and even death.

Scientists have seen some improvement in diabetes during lab trials with mice. These experiments showed that CBD reduced diabetes by 56 percent and improved inflammation in the diabetic mice. This is a long way from CBD being used as a treatment or preventative measure for diabetes, but the research is promising.

CBD Legality

Many people may wonder if CBD is legal to sell or consume, given that marijuana is still legal. Because CBD will not get you high, it doesn’t fall under the same legal guidelines that THC does. However, the FDA doesn’t allow companies to sell certain supplements containing CBD oil since it’s considered an active ingredient.

The largest issue with CBD legality is that there is no single regulatory body responsible for ensuring the quality of CBD. This means that irresponsible companies could sell you something that they claim is CBD oil without ever telling you how much CBD is actually in it. It’s critical, therefore, that you buy your CBD products from reputable companies that you can trust.
