Where Does Maeng Da Kratom Come From?
Maeng Da kratom comes from the Mitragyna speciosa plant. Mitragyna is an evergreen tree that grows natively in Southeast Asia. This tree is part of the Rubiaceae family of plants, which includes everyone’s favorite: the coffee tree.
Peoples of Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia have been harvesting the leaves of Mitragyna for centuries. Why? Because, once crushed into powder, Mitragyna leaves create the different types of kratom, including Maeng Da.
Turning Mitragyna into Kratom
The first step to turning Mitragyna leaves into Maeng Da is the drying process. Harvesters remove the leaves from the Mitragyna tree and send them through one of three drying processes.
These three drying processes create red, green, and white vein kratom: what we call kratom strains.
To make red vein kratom from Mitragyna leaves, the leaves get laid out in the sun to dry. Modern techniques have switched to using powerful UV lights for more efficient dry times. The red veins are removed and the dried leaves are crushed into a powder.
Green vein kratom is different. It’s processed in a pitch black room with good ventilation. When the leaves are finished processing, they sit out in the sun or under a UV lamp for only one hour before crushing them into a powder.
The process of making white vein kratom is similar to that of green vein kratom. White vein kratom gets dried in the dark in a well-ventilated area. The only difference is that white kratom sits under the sun for much longer than green kratom.
Once you have the three different strains of kratom, you can make the different varieties of Maeng Da kratom.
Is Maeng Da a Kratom Strain?
Kratom strains come in three varieties:
- Green vein kratom
- White vein kratom
- Red vein kratom
As you can see, that doesn’t include Maeng Da. That’s because Maeng Da isn’t technically a kratom strain. Instead, different combinations of the three kratom strains create the different varieties of Maeng Da.
Making Maeng Da Varieties
So, how do cultivators make Maeng Da varieties from red, green, and white kratom strains? They use a horticultural process known as grafting. With grafting, a breeder takes the tissues of different plants to create a brand new plant, called a variety.
Each Maeng Da variety differs slightly from the other but they all have a few things in common. Namely, they’re highly potent and long-lasting. Maeng Da varieties also have the unique quality of both pain-alleviating qualities and energizing effects.
What are the different Maeng Da varieties and which one is right for you? We’re talking about that next, so check it out.
Red Maeng Da
You get red Maeng Da through the combination of white vein and red vein kratom in nearly equal parts. These varieties are most commonly grown in Indonesia, the original home of Mitragyna speciosa.
Red Maeng Da offers the energizing effects of Maeng Da plus the relaxing qualities of a more traditional kratom strain. It’s reported that red Maeng Da is the ideal stress reliever.
Perhaps the most potent of the Maeng Da varieties, red Maeng Da isn’t ideal for newbies.
White Maeng Da
High percentages of white vein kratom combined with green vein kratom will produce white Maeng Da. This variety is common to the Kalimantan region of Indonesia.
White Maeng Da is unique for its pungent scent. The aroma is pleasing to most people and reinforces the variety’s mood-boosting qualities.
Green Maeng Da
Green Maeng Da kratom varieties are the opposite of white Maeng Da. Instead of using high percentages of white vein kratom, they combine low concentrations of white and high concentratins of green vein kratom.
This variety of Maeng Da has the energizing qualities expected from this type of kratom. Like white Maeng Da, the green variety also offers mood-elevating effects.
Yellow Maeng Da
Like red Maeng Da, the yellow variety combines red and white vein kratom. The difference? While red varieties combine nearly equal concentrations of each strain, yellow Maeng Da is almost completely derived from white vein kratom.
Yellow Maeng Da usually comes from the island of Borneo. Some leaves are grown outside of Borneo, but cultivators have to recreate the island’s hot and humid climate for the best results.
The low amount of red vein kratom in this variety provides a low level of relaxation. At the same time, the high concentration of white vein kratom offers energizing and mood-enhancing qualities.
Gold Maeng Da
Perhaps the ultimate Maeng Da variety, gold Maeng Da is a mix of white and green vein kratom in nearly equal parts. Producers make this variety by drying the leaves for much longer than required for the others on our list.
Gold Maeng Da is most well-known for its pain relieving qualities. It’s also moderately stimulating and provides mild euphoric effects.
If you’re new to kratom or Maeng Da varieties, gold Maeng Da is a perfect entry point.
